HAIL TO THE CHIEF

Just as quickly as the miraculous purple balloon of love had enclosed them, their ship, their psyches, and their talking food, it disappeared with a loud pop. It was so disconcerting that Grace thought maybe she’d been cleft in two again. Thankfully she was still whole, but regretfully no longer amethyst. The remnants of the feeling of connectedness she’d had with the entire universe and beyond lingered, but just out of reach. Like that really great dream where everything went right and she understood the meaning of life, but immediately forgot it on waking up.

Gol-darn it.

Rhodes was still clutching her hand like the two of them were physically melded together. Slowly, he shook his head.

“I want to go back,” Grace said immediately. “Let’s go back. Don’t you want to go back? I really wanted to get all up in your brain and have the most mind-blowing sex of all time in the midst of the purple hole, and I realize that sounds like some sort of really obscene euphemism, doesn’t it?”

“That was pretty spectacular,” Rhodes agreed. “But you’re just as beautiful out here as you were swathed in perpetual purple.”

“Flatterer.”

“It’s what I live for.” As he let out a breath, his eminently kissable mouth formed a perfect o. Like he was reliving a very personal, very private, very special moment.

Grace got it. “That was almost like being folded in half, then in half again, and turned into one of those paper fortune teller things I used to make in elementary school when I thought I had all the answers.”

With the littlest guffaw she’d ever heard, Rhodes nodded. “We used to make those too.”

Geez, was everything from Ourania originally, or was it just a child’s cosmic consciousness at work? She neither knew nor particularly cared, because her thoughts were stuck on the image of Little Boy Rhodes folding paper just so, his little boy mouth twisted into half a frown as he deeply considered life and the future, then placed his favorite fortunes and future scenarios inside.

The image was so delightful, she could practically touch it. “If I were making one of those now, I’d have all the answers lead to potential places we’ve wanted to go and never quite gotten to.” Got to? Nah, that didn’t sound right. After the melodious symphony of sweetness inside the purple hole, her voice sounded banal and flat to her ears.

She imagined that getting back to normal, or whatever counted as normal, would take some time.

Rhodes also seemed a little disoriented. Like his soul had been stretched and snapped back, maybe, like a living, breathing mobile Ouranian rubber band. But he let go of her hand after another kiss to her knuckles—hey, she could really get used to that kind of chivalry, and also it sent a jolt of desire from her hand to her heart—and set his palms on the center console. “That was, as you’d say, pretty trippy.” Blinking hard a few times, he finally focused on the screen in front of them.
